Finding a New Home

A Journey from Fear to Healing and Hope

“When I was in Haiti, I was working, but the growing insecurity there made me fearful. That fear is what led me to leave. At one point, there were gunshots firing, even while I was at work. My wife was constantly worried. She saw the danger around us, but she didn’t even know if I would be able to leave.

“In 2022, we fled. We first arrived in New York, and while we were there, we had access to some medical assistance. My wife’s blood pressure was dangerously high, and I kept taking her to the doctor. When we moved again, we lost our insurance, but my niece took us to Katallasso. They helped us, providing medication—especially for my wife. She is alive today because of them. Their support was life-saving.

“When we arrived here at Katallasso, we felt at home. There are no words to describe it. I was in awe. It felt like coming to a place where people genuinely care for each other. The scorching sun doesn’t trouble me, and the rain doesn’t worry me—I have a roof over my head. That is why, whenever I pray, I pray for my Katallasso family. I am grateful for the love and kindness that surround me here.

“This place has truly become my home. Even my own family did not make me feel the way I feel here. Now, my blood pressure is stable. I am thankful for the people who have welcomed us with open arms.

“I know I am not the only one who felt compelled to leave [the dangerous situation in Haiti]. Many others feel the same way, but they have no way out. My home in Haiti was vandalized; everything was taken. Right now, there is nothing for me to go back to.

“The journey has been difficult, but here, I have found hope. I have found a new home.”
